The film journalist Hiroo Otaka reported on Tuesday that Naoko Yamada's K-ON! anime film was the No. 3 top-grossing film at the Japanese box office during the New Year's period. As of January 9, it has earned 1,455,230,000 yen (about US$18,909,000). Only two films earned more money during the last month of 2011 and the first week of 2012: Brad Bird's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (4,055,300,000 yen or US$52,680,000) and Yoshihiro Nakamura's live-action film adaptation of the Kaibutsu-kun manga (2,955,860,000 yen or US$38,398,000).
